Levels of Care

Whether you or someone you love is recovering from a life-changing injury, surgery or diagnosis, we offer a network of resources and care options to advance your quality of life and get you back to you.

Coordinated, collaborative care. It's what makes us different. More importantly, it's how we give you the best care available anywhere. From short-term, intensive rehabilitation to long-term care to outpatient therapy and supportive services, you deserve every advantage and the right level of care when you need it.

Ensuring that you are admitted to the best level of care to meet your needs is the first step towards your recovery. Fortunately, Spaulding offers all four levels of rehabilitation care, so you have excellent choices no matter which kind of inpatient care you need.

Levels Of Care

  • At Home
  • Hospital Rehab
  • Long-Term Acute
  • Outpatient
  • Skilled Nursing
  • Wellness
  • Hospital Rehab

Hospital or inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, like Spaulding Boston and Spaulding Cape Cod, offer hospital-level, or acute, rehabilitation care. This is the most comprehensive level of rehabilitation care, and it is designed to help patients improve function and regain independence after a serious illness, injury or surgery. Our teams work closely with your physician to balance medical treatment with overall recovery to get you back to health and back to life as soon as possible.

Most patients stay for a week to up to a month, with the average being 13 – 15 days, and participate in a minimum of three hours of rehab each day.

  • Long-term Acute

Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care Cambridge offers a range of treatments and rehabilitation services for people with complex medical conditions that require a high level of attention and a longer recovery period. Long-term Acute Care Hospitals help people with complex or chronic conditions improve function and quality of life.

Length of a patient’s stay at a Long-term Acute facility is typically measured in months.

  • Skilled Nursing

Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center Brighton provides therapy and medical treatment for persons who no longer require acute hospital-level care. A Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) may be the best choice when you or a family member needs ongoing care in conjunction with other services such as physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, audiology services and more.

  • Outpatient

For diagnosis, treatment or advanced rehabilitation on an ongoing basis, outpatient therapy gives you access to the benefit and support of experienced physical, occupational, and speech therapists, audiologists, prosthetists, orthotists and other specialists when you don't need to stay in the hospital.

  • At Home

For high-quality care when home offers practical benefits, comfort and enhanced quality of life. Partners HealthCare at Home brings the most advanced therapy and caring staff, right to your door.

  • Wellness program benefits

Combining things like yoga or meditation and mindfulness with traditional rehabilitation therapy techniques can help expand your care. Our programs consider the needs of people just like you and our instructors are trained to adapt each practice based on your needs. Students have benefited from increased mobility, reduced stress and even lower blood pressure after participating in our wellness programs.

  • Who can participate?

Our wellness programs are open to all patients of any age and ability – both inpatient Hospital Rehab and outpatient – for long and short term. We also offer wellness programs for specific abilities and conditions, such as Parkinson's disease and arthritis. Our staff and community members often attend as well.
