Ways to Support Schoen Adams Research Institute

  • Discovery Centers: Driving Recovery Research

Schoen Adams Research Institute’s five founding Discovery Centers are hubs of research excellence and innovation for priority areas in rehabilitation medicine.

Your gifts to these centers fuel the type of scientific collaboration, risk-taking, and creativity needed to make the discoveries that will revolutionize the field of recovery and transform lives.

  • Research Accelerator: Speeding the Science of Recovery

Spaulding’s Research Accelerator allows our rehabilitation experts opportunities to explore novel avenues of investigation and launch pilot studies that can be leveraged to secure other major sources of funding, including the National Institutes of Health.

Your gifts to this fund offer our researchers the flexibility to be innovative and pursue promising scientific leads.

  • Leadership Catalyst: Empowering Emerging Researchers

Spaulding’s Leadership Catalyst is an invaluable resource to support research fellowships and fund junior faculty positions.

Your gifts to this fund help us grow a robust pipeline of young investigators who are defining the course of rehabilitation research and advancing the standard of care for patients and families.

Rehabilitation Outcomes Center at Spaulding (ROCS)

Two researchers sit at a desk cluttered with papers and binders, reviewing something on a laptop.Outcomes research seeks to understand the end results of healthcare practices or interventions. By studying healthcare systems in action, we capture a more comprehensive picture of the many factors that play a role over the course of a person’s recovery. Philanthropy to ROCS will help us advance and sustain this work, which will ultimately improve the quality of rehabilitation care.

Giving with Impact

Gifts to Spaulding advance care and research to change lives

Paula Ness Speers and Mark Speers

“This is the largest financial commitment we have ever made to any organization. It speaks to our confidence in the people we have come to know at Spaulding and the important mission of the organization.”

— Paula Ness Speers

Paula Ness Speers, chair of the Spaulding Board of Trustees, and Mark S. Speers made a lead gift of $5 million to establish the Discovery Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery at Schoen Adams Research Institute. The Center that bears their names is dedicated to conducting translational research that maximizes mobility and functional improvements for people living with spinal cord injuries, while aggressively pursuing cures for paralysis.

Ellen Gordon with daughter Karen Gordon Mills and son-in-law Barry Mills

“Spaulding is the ultimate can-do place, where there is nothing that is impossible. A person’s limits are only the beginning, not the ending. Spaulding scientists spend hours in the laboratories researching answers and never give up.”

— Ellen R. Gordon

Ellen Gordon (left) and her late husband, Melvin, established the Ellen R. and Melvin J. Gordon Center for the Cure and Treatment of Paralysis at Spaulding and Harvard Medical School. This cross-institutional initiative is pushing the boundaries of research in its mission to transform our understanding of paralysis.
