After a several-year journey, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod is proud to announce it has achieved Magnet-accreditation from The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program®. Spaulding Cape Cod in Sandwich, MA becomes the first rehabilitation hospital in New England and fifth worldwide to earn the distinction joining a select group of among less than 9.4 percent of hospitals nationwide.

“To earn this distinction took the commitment by every member of Spaulding Cape Cod, with the support of the entire Spaulding Rehabilitation. Over the entire process our incredible team kept a focus on achieving the highest standards in patient care and quality by fostering a culture of excellence,” said Chief Nursing Officer and Operating Officer Maureen Banks, RN, DNP, MBA, NEA-BC, FACHE. “I am so proud of Spaulding Cape Cod to be a trail blazer with this recognition by raising the appreciation of rehabilitative care.”

The Commission on Magnet Recognition voted unanimously to approve the designation. Magnet recognition is the gold standard for excellence in patient care and is a factor when the public judges health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from staff and leadership. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

“Through all levels of Spaulding led by Dr. Banks and her team, there was a profound commitment to the Magnet journey. This designation not only validates the quality of care we provide for our patients, it sets Spaulding apart as a leader in the field. I congratulate our staff that made this tremendous achievement possible,” said Ross Zafonte, DO, President, Spaulding Rehabilitation.

Health care organizations applying for Magnet recognition must demonstrate an adherence to Magnet concepts and demonstrate improvements in patient care and quality. A key component is investing in staff, particularly nursing, to provide pathways to improve career opportunities through research, education, advancement and support. Spaulding as part of its Magnet journey launched new initiatives to supporting Nursing-led clinical research, broader education and clinical ladder outreach as well as expanded mentoring programs for nurses. Spaulding Cape Cod achieving this status is part of the broader Magnet journey ahead, with plans for other Spaulding clinical sites in the near future.

Research shows that Magnet-recognized organizations demonstrate better patient outcomes and higher patient satisfaction. As a Magnet-recognized organization, Spaulding Cape Cod is making a significant contribution to the community by keeping patients healthy and safe.
