Acute Rehabilitation Unit

For patients needing intensive rehabilitation following recent injuries or medical events like a stroke or traumatic injury, the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) provides focused, short-term rehab services. This unit offers specialized rehabilitation therapy along with close medical monitoring, helping patients transition from acute hospital care back to daily life.

The ARU provides the same level of care you would receive in Spaulding Charlestown. It is a specialized unit for patients who require intensive rehabilitation (at least 3 hours of therapy per day) along with complex medical and nursing care. Stays in the ARU typically last 2-4 weeks, depending on each patient’s recovery process.

Key features of our Spaulding Cambridge ARU include:

  • A newly renovated 30-bed unit
  • Intensive rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech-language pathology (based on patient need)
  • A therapy gym located in the unit for convenient access to rehabilitation services
  • Access to advanced treatments and technologies, as well as research-driven rehabilitation care
  • 24-hour care from in-house physicians and nurse practitioners
  • Physician specialty consultants in cardiology, orthopedics, pulmonary medicine, cancer, infectious disease, psychiatry and kidney care
  • Physical medicine and rehab (PM&R) consultants to support specialized rehabilitation needs
  • On-site services like lab work, chemotherapy, hemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis (HD/PD), and imaging
  • Magnet nursing designation, a recognition of excellence in nursing care
