Spaulding Hospital Cambridge Achieves Prestigious Magnet Nursing Designation for First Time
Becomes second post-acute care hospital to receive Magnet accreditation
Cambridge, MA – After a several-year journey, Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care Cambridge is proud to announce it has achieved Magnet accreditation from The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program®. Spaulding Hospital Cambridge becomes the second post-acute hospital and the first Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) level hospital in New England to earn the distinction, joining a select group of just 9.4 percent of hospitals nationwide.

The Commission on Magnet Recognition voted unanimously to approve the designation. Magnet recognition is the gold standard for excellence in patient care and is a factor when the public judges health care organizations. To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from staff and leadership. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Health care organizations applying for Magnet recognition must demonstrate an adherence to Magnet concepts and demonstrate improvements in patient care and quality. A key component is investing in staff, particularly nursing, to provide pathways to improve career opportunities through research, education, advancement and support. Spaulding as part of its Magnet journey launched new initiatives to supporting Nursing led clinical research, broader education and clinical ladder outreach as well as expanded mentoring programs for nurses. Spaulding Hospital Cambridge joins Spaulding Cape Cod in achieving this status, which is part of the broader Magnet journey ahead with plans for other Spaulding clinical sites in the near future.
