About

Dr. Carter has been a psychologist specializing in rehabilitation and brain injury for over 25 years. He is currently the Director of Continuity for Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Services for the Spaulding Rehabilitation where he is working on developing systematic and system-wide approaches to the assessment and care of individuals with brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. He is the primary psychologist for the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Brain Injury Program where he cares for patients and their families and coordinates clinical care addressing the emotional and behavioral disturbances that can arise following a brain injury. He has been a member of the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and on the faculty at the Harvard Medical School since 2002. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he is active in the Harvard Medical School Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency program and is the committee chair for the Spaulding Graduate Medical Education Committee. He is the facilitator for the bi-monthly Schwartz Center Rounds focusing on the delivery of compassionate care at Spaulding. He has contributed chapters on traumatic brain injury to the MGH Comprehensive Clinical Psychiatry Manual and to The Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Traumatic Brain Injury. He is a lecturer at the MGH Institute for Health Professionals. He has presented on a variety of topics related to the field of Rehabilitation Medicine at a number of regional, national and international conferences. His current research interests are in the area of psychological adjustment to traumatic injury for survivors and their families.
