Comprehensive Spasticity Management at Spaulding Boston Outpatient
Our Comprehensive Spasticity Management program offers a wide range of services to people living with spasticity and other neurological related muscle disorders. So, if you're struggling with spasticity or dystonia, our medical and rehabilitation experts and therapists, all skilled in neurological rehab and treatment-enhancing technologies, may be able to dramatically improve your life.
If you're dealing with spasticity, you know it's an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness. It occurs when nerve pathways within the brain or spinal cord that control muscles are damaged by stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, ALS and other neurological conditions. Spasticity causes pain and spasms that can interfere with arm or hand function, walking, speaking and even with performing regular, day-to-day activities.
Fortunately, relief is possible. We will work together, to take the pain out of the picture.
Our Approach to Care
Because the effects of spasticity can vary from person to person, a comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment by a physician well-trained in spasticity management is very important. Spaulding’s physicians, specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), are experts in the use of Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) to relax muscles and reduce excessive muscle contractions.
Other services may include medication management, baclofen pump management and nerve blocks in conjunction with physical, occupational and speech therapies. Ultimately, our goal is to improve your spasticity by increasing functionality and independence, thereby maximizing your overall quality of life.
Our team is led by an experienced physiatrist certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The physician works closely with physical, occupational and speech therapists who have been trained in treating spasticity. These clinicians collaborate with orthotists trained in the newest braces and other adaptive devices as well as surgeons for intervention when indicated.
