Investing in Innovation and Technology

Driven by our sole focus of treating our patients and envisioning their future, Spaulding lives at the forefront of medical innovation and technological imagination. From introducing advanced stroke and cognitive recovery techniques to designing and accessing prosthetics not available anywhere else in the world, our laboratories and centers are pushing the boundaries of rehabilitation care.

Fueling rehabilitation breakthroughs

We’re already transforming recovery with new assistive technologies, therapeutic and monitoring devices, and a host of other clinical innovations.

With your help, we can revolutionize recovery for Spaulding patients and for millions of people living with disabilities.

Spaulding’s Position for Success

  • An Incubator of Innovation

Spaulding’s two main medical campuses are located in the world’s premier hub of clinical care and biomedical research, Boston and Cambridge, attracting the best minds and most creative thinkers to our work.

  • Honors and Accolades

The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) awarded Spaulding the prestigious Model System designation in Traumatic Brain Injury and Burn Injury – making us the only hospital in the nation to have received these distinctions simultaneously.

Explore Our Latest Innovations

  • Improving Function with Wearable Robots

Holding a toothbrush and feeding yourself seem like simple tasks – until that ability is stripped away.

Spaulding physician-scientists, in collaboration with engineering colleagues at Harvard’s Wyss Institute/School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, are developing next-generation soft wearable robots that utilize pleated fabrics with microchannel inflatable air bladders to passively guide hand and shoulder movements.

With continued support and funding, further development and evaluation of these soft wearable robots will restore life-altering upper extremity functions for our patients suffering from a wide range of neurological conditions.

  • Saving Lives with Clean-Hand Technology

Adequate hand hygiene is a simple solution to prevent transmission of hospital-acquired infections for patients who spend days, weeks, or months in the hospital…but 100% compliance is difficult to track confidently.

Spaulding Cambridge is the first rehabilitation hospital in the nation to conduct a hospital-wide pilot test of a new wireless technology that reminds staff of required hand hygiene behaviors every time they enter and exit each patient room.

Led by our nursing staff, this low-cost/high-impact project is showing impressive early results. With additional funds, Spaulding’s nurse-researchers aim to scale up and disseminate our findings to protect more patients from infection in post-acute settings.
