Pediatric Rehabilitation Program

Boy on Lokomat

At the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, we know that Pediatric Rehabilitation has to do more than rebuild strength and function. It has to provide children and their families with the inspiration and support they need to keep going and reach their full potential.

The Spaulding Network provides expert rehabilitative care for children of all ages with complex medical and rehabilitative needs, including brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, orthopedic trauma, neurological conditions and developmental delay. Whether your child needs intensive inpatient rehabilitation, coordinated outpatient therapy or assistance at home or in school, we offer services designed to help children reach their greatest level of ability, independence and adjustment.

Among the Spaulding Networks pediatric services in Boston are 14 private patient rooms, a developmental playroom, and a child-oriented therapy area. Other clinical resources include an assistive technology center and an adaptive sports and recreation program. Patients have access to a wide range of medical specialists and services available through the academic medical centers in Boston.

Approach to Care

The unique needs of children and their families are important to us. That’s why we take a holistic approach. Our clinicians work closely with each child’s family and support systems to plan a rehabilitation program tailored to the child’s developmental, medical, physical, psychological, social and educational needs. One parent at a time may stay overnight for as long as needed, and we have a welcoming visitation policy for family members, siblings and peers.

Input from all clinical team members, the child, and the family is considered in developing goals, treatment plans, and changes throughout  your rehab stay. Whether it’s at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston or any of our outpatient pediatric programs, you’ll find expert caregivers who know how important it is to nurture, engage, and encourage children to become all they can be. Our rehabilitative care is designed to meet the full spectrum of each patient’s needs and help them get ready for the transition back to home, the community, and school.

Expertise

Your child’s treatment team may include pediatricians, physiatrists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, a child psychiatrist, physical and occupational therapists, child life specialist, nutritionist, case manager, and speech-language pathologists. All of them have specialized education and training in working with children and families.

Our therapists, physicians, and nurses regularly mentor students on Spaulding Boston’s Pediatric unit and give lectures and presentations to outside audiences at conferences and at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions.

Program Outcomes

In 2010, patients in the Pediatric Rehabilitation Program of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network achieved higher rates of functional improvement than national average.
