Regenerative Sports Medicine at Spaulding Wellesley
Innovative treatments and technologies are revolutionizing sports medicine. At the forefront of that revolution is the practice of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine uses treatments that stimulate cell growth and accelerate healing. We work with you to manage your injuries and improve tissue health at the biological level - promoting healing and performance.
Using musculoskeletal ultrasound, our physicians can look closely at your tendons, ligaments and joints to identify the right treatment to give you the best possible outcome.
Spaulding's Approach to Regenerative Sports Medicine
At Spaulding Outpatient Center Wellesley we are utilizing the following innovative techniques with musculoskeletal ultrasound guidance to improve our patient outcomes.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a cutting-edge technique that accelerates the healing of tendon injuries and can help with osteoarthritic pain. PRP is produced from your own blood. Platelets are naturally occurring cells in your blood that contain a variety of chemicals and growth factors that promote tissue healing and regeneration. These concentrated platelets can then be injected to your injured tissues with ultrasound guidance to promote healing. This technique may be used for a number of conditions including osteoarthritis and sports injuries.
Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) Therapy
Bone marrow concentrate (BMC) therapy is a non-surgical treatment used to treat various orthopedic injuries. BMC is a concentrate of signaling cells with regenerative potential obtained from your own bone marrow. A Spaulding physician can remove a small amount of your bone marrow in order to generate a powerful concentrate that will be injected in the injured area. With newer techniques and technological improvements, regenerative cells can easily be obtained and concentrated by a simple office procedure. This technique may be used for several conditions including osteoarthritis and sports injuries.
Fat Transfer Treatment
Fat transfer is a new non-surgical regenerative cell treatment that promotes a healing response in target tissues by using your body’s fat cells, which are rich in signaling cells and growth factors. This therapy option can provide long-term relief from chronic joint pain, torn tendons and other sports-related injuries.
Dr. Joanne Borg-Stein leads the Regenerative Medicine programs at Spaulding Outpatient Center Wellesley. She is an Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School and specializes in sports medicine and musculoskeletal injury performing prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate concentrate and fat transfer regenerative injections for sports injury and osteoarthritis, as well as diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound. The following physicians utilize most of these technologies and are experts in these areas of sports medicine; Lauren Elson, MD, Christine Eng, MD, Dana Kotler, MD and Ariana Vora, MD.
We have a dedicated team of physical therapists who work with our patients before and after the procedure to optimize function, performance and return to activity/sport.
