Amputee Program at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston

Persons Served

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston (SRH) collects and reports information on the results achieved by our patients. This allows our staff to compare the functional improvement of SRH Amputee Program patients to similar patients across the nation.

The program served 143 patients in 2023. The average age was 60 years and the national average was 62 years. The average length of stay was 14 days, and the national average was 12 days. 27% were female and 73% were male.

Patients Served by Diagnosis

SRH provides expert care for multiple Rehabilitation Impairment Categories.

Bar chart showing patients served by diagnosis. Stroke 31%, brain injury 17.8%, orthopedic 14.4%, spinal cord injury 12.1%, miscellaneous 11.8%, neurological 6.2%, amputee 5.9%, burn 0.8%.

Functional Improvement Quality Measures

Multiple metrics are used to determine patient improvement throughout their inpatient stay. Patients are scored on their admission and again at discharge in the categories of Self-Care and Mobility, which includes multiple skills and abilities as shown in the graphic below. The improvements are measured by the change in score for both and can be compared with similar rehabilitation facilities. Higher scores are better.

Bar chart: Program participants' self-care scores improved by 11.9 points, compared to 13.3 points nationally. Bar chart: Participants' mobility scores improved by 26.2 points, compared to 28.6 points nationally.

Therapy services are provided at a minimum of 15 hours per week (900 minutes over a rolling 7-day week from admission). All patients receive 24-hour physician and rehab nursing care.

Patient Experience

At Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston (SRH), satisfaction with your experience is a high priority. SRH seeks patient feedback to continually improve the patient experience. Patients are surveyed just after discharge and again at 90 days to find out how they are functioning after leaving SRH. Higher scores are better.

Pie chart showing that 90% of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital patients would highly recommend SRH to friends and family.

Bar chart: Overall satisfaction at 90 days was 98.0%, compared to 94.8% nationally. Bar chart: 91.0% of patients said the program improved their quality of life, compared to 84.0% nationally.
