Our Services at Spaulding Cambridge

Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC)

As a certified long-term acute care hospital, we provide comprehensive, long-term medical care for patients with complex or chronic conditions requiring extended hospital stays and close oversight. For many patients, the average stay in an LTAC is around one month or more, depending on their needs and progress.

At Spaulding Cambridge, we offer specialized on-site rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from:

  • Brain and spinal cord injuries, including disorders of consciousness
  • Cardiac (heart) conditions
  • Neurological conditions, including stroke
  • Cancer and its treatments
  • Orthopedics (bone and joint) surgeries or injuries
  • Transplant surgery
  • Surgeries requiring extended recovery
  • Pulmonary (lung) care, including ventilator weaning

Our clinical expertise and innovative programs enable us to support healing and help patients adapt to life after serious medical events.

Acute Rehabilitation

For patients needing intensive rehabilitation following recent injuries or medical events like a stroke or traumatic injury, the Spaulding Cambridge Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) provides focused, short-term rehab services. This unit offers specialized rehabilitation therapy along with close medical monitoring, helping patients transition from acute hospital care back to daily life.

While our hospital is licensed as a long-term, acute care hospital, the ARU is a specialized unit for patients who require intensive rehabilitation along with complex medical and nursing care. Stays in the ARU typically last 3-4 weeks, depending on each patient’s recovery process.

Key features of our Spaulding Cambridge ARU include:

  • A newly renovated 30-bed unit
  • A therapy gym located in the unit for convenient access to rehabilitation services
  • 24-hour care from in-house physicians and nurse practitioners
  • Physician specialty consultants in cardiology, orthopedics, pulmonary medicine, cancer, infectious disease, psychiatry and kidney care
  • Physical medicine and rehab (PM&R) consultants to support specialized rehabilitation needs
  • On-site services like lab work, chemotherapy, hemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis (HD/PD), and imaging
  • Magnet nursing designation, a recognition of excellence in nursing care
