We can all use a little help to find our strength sometimes.
For Spaulding physical therapist Briana Williams, it’s been hard being apart from her mom and the rest of her close-knit New Jersey family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regular video calls have become extremely important for them. So this spring, when Spaulding paused operations at the Braintree outpatient center where Briana works and redeployed her to our Charlestown hospital, she immediately saw how much her new role would mean to other families.
Briana was among the first members of our Virtual Visitor Program team, connecting patients with their families and friends through video calls when safety precautions restricted in-person visits. Briana worked on the Traumatic Brain Injury Unit with patients who were often unable to use the devices without aid but who benefitted greatly from hearing and seeing their loved ones.
“The number of times I heard, ‘Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you, we love you,’ was heart-wrenching,” she says. “It was so rewarding to know I helped get that message to people who needed to hear it.”
At Spaulding, we help our patients and families find physical strength—and also emotional strength and confidence. It’s an important facet of rehabilitation and recovery, especially in light of the current pandemic.
Donor support makes our care teams stronger, so that they can be strong for our patients and families. Gifts to Spaulding help us continue to keep our employees and patients supported and safe through these challenging times.
Throughout her redeployment, Briana says it was a relief to know that she and her colleagues had the Spaulding network and donors behind them—funding employee assistance grants for those in need, helping purchase critical personal protective equipment (PPE), and supplying nourishing snack packs and meals during shifts. And now that she’s back treating patients in Braintree, she still feels that reassurance.
