Boston, MA –
Disability: IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) released the 2022 Disability Equality Index (DEI) — the seventh year measured by the Index. Among the record 247 corporations was the Boston-based Spaulding Rehabilitation, a member of Mass General Brigham, which earned the highest score possible of 100 on the Index for the fourth straight year. In 2022, 415 corporations, including 69 Fortune 100, 188 Fortune 500, and 227 Fortune 1000 utilized the DEI to benchmark their disability inclusion efforts.

“As we move forward together in healthcare, keeping diversity and inclusion efforts as a guiding principle is vital to producing better outcomes for patients. All of us at Spaulding are proud that we are once again being recognized for our commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. This honor will energize us to continue to advance equity in all aspects of our work,” said Dr. Ross Zafonte, President, Spaulding Rehabilitation.

The DEI was created by the DEI Advisory Committee, a diverse group of business leaders, policy experts and disability advocates. The DEI exists to help business impact the unemployment/underemployment of people with disabilities. The 2022 DEI measured: Culture & Leadership; Enterprise-Wide Access; Employment Practices (Benefits, Recruitment, Employment, Education, Retention & Advancement, Accommodations); Community Engagement; Supplier Diversity; and for this year included new non-weighted Leadership questions about including disability in corporate board diversity criteria.

“Disability inclusion is a rapidly expanding aspect of corporate culture, and it’s gratifying to partner with 415 companies on the 2022 Disability Equality Index,” said Jill Houghton, President and CEO of Disability:IN. “These top-scoring companies not only excel in disability inclusion, many are also adopting emerging trends and pioneering measures that can move the disability agenda from accommodation to inclusion and, ultimately, genuine belonging."

The recognition of being a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” is reserved for those companies that have scored 80 or above on the DEI. See the full list of top-scoring companies.

"Maintaining a top score takes the full commitment at all levels of an organization and the willingness to change and improve when possible. As an employer and caregiver, we know how vital employment is to overall wellness and bringing in the broadest work force possible that reflects the communities we are a part of serves to enhance that. We look forward to continuing to create a model we encourage others to adopt” Lynne Brady Wagner, Chief Learning and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Spaulding Rehabilitation.
