Spaulding Rehab is now a Hub Partner of the Learning Health Systems Rehabilitation Research Network

Recently Spaulding Rehabilitation announced a new partnership to fuel research and discovery by joining the Learning Health Systems Rehabilitation Research Network (LeaRRn) as a Learning Health System (LHS) Hub Partner. As an LHS partner, Spaulding will be able to systematically integrate research, evidence, and internal data to guide clinical practice. By joining LeaRRn, Spaulding will generate, implement, and disseminate research that can be used in real-world settings to improve the quality, value, and outcomes of rehabilitation care.

“Spaulding is proud to join this important consortium as a LeaRRn LHS Hub Partner and we are excited to be part of this critical effort to fuel research and discovery to benefit all the populations we serve,” said Dr. Ross Zafonte, President of Spaulding Rehabilitation. “Our clinicians and researchers are energized by this unified effort to advance the quality of care across rehabilitative medicine.”

LeaRRn, a rehabilitation research infrastructure center that is a collaboration among Brown University, Boston University and University of Pittsburgh, was established in 2020 to promote LHS research. LeaRRn is funded by the National Institutes of Health through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Nursing Research, as part of the Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource Network (MR3). The MR3 network includes six national rehabilitation research infrastructure centers tasked with providing training and resources to foster clinical and translational research in medical rehabilitation. MR3 promotes research and collaboration among medical rehabilitation investigators to improve upon functional recovery and develop therapeutic strategies for all rehabilitation patients. The inclusion of LeaRRn as an MR3 rehabilitation research infrastructure center demonstrates that the NIH recognizes the importance of developing health care systems that provide data-driven, evidence-based care.

LeaRRn offers a wide range of opportunities for training in their LHS research competencies, including a Webinar Series, Grand Rounds and an annual Institute. The LeaRRn website provides access to an extensive array of LHS resources. LHS Hub Partners are an important component of LeaRRn’s mission and provide unique opportunities to advance LHS research. LHS Hub Partners function as ‘learning laboratories’ by embedding researchers to address research priorities identified by the health system. LeaRRn provides funding for LHS Scholars to work with LHS Hub Partners and funding to support pilot studies.

As an LHS Hub Partner, Spaulding has access to training activities and opportunities to work with LHS Scholars on projects focused on the following research priorities:

  • Standardizing clinical care for real-time visualization and application of EHR data
  • Using large databases to track & improve rehabilitation outcomes
  • Disparities in access, quality, and outcomes of rehabilitation
  • Patient-Reported Outcome Measures
  • Risk of chronic disease after trauma
  • Maximizing outcomes and discharge to the community
  • Evaluating alternative nursing workflows to maximize patient outcomes

The Rehabilitation Outcomes Center at Spaulding (ROCS) serves as the coordinating center for LeaRRn’s activities. To learn more about this new partnership and opportunities at Spaulding please contact: SRNOutcomesCenter@partners.org.
