Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model Systems Team at Spaulding Participates in National Burn Awareness Week 2023

Each year hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer a burn injury serious enough to require medical attention. Many of these can be lifelong traumatic injuries that can be preventable with an understanding of the risks. For National Burn Awareness Week this year the theme is “Hot Liquids Burn Like Fire!”. Scalding burn injuries often occur in the home from household appliances and can be especially a high risk for young children. As part of the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model Systems (BHBIMS) at Spaulding efforts to spread awareness on the impact of burn injury, the team is hosting education events for patients and clinicians.

“As part of our burn injury model system work, bringing education and awareness to the healthcare community around prevention and treatment of burn injuries is a critical piece. Scald injuries cause significant trauma and elevating the knowledge for resources available to improve the lives of the communities we serve is something we are proud to advance with our colleagues nationwide as part of National Burn Awareness Week,” said Jeffrey Schneider, MD, Director of the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System and Medical Director of the Burn and Trauma Rehabilitation Program at Spaulding.

As a federally funded Burn Injury Model System, the BHBIMS is committed to conducting rigorous research, with a specific focus on the long-term functional and psychosocial outcomes of burn injury. This past year the BHBIMS team published a study that examined patient outcomes even up to 20 years after a burn injury demonstrating these are chronic conditions with far reaching physical and psychosocial impacts. These often require significant resources from the health care system and broader society. The ability to raise awareness on prevention for the public and resources for those impacted can enhance the opportunities for better lifetime outcomes. The BHBMIS is conducting ongoing research, advocacy and education efforts inviting clinicians and the public to learn more at their website or by contacting them at BostonHarvardBIMS@partners.org.
