Pastoral Care Services
Spaulding Rehabilitation Network (SRN) Chaplains are dedicated to providing culturally-sensitive spiritual care to people of all faith traditions and beliefs with a strong interfaith focus. They serve as compassionate spiritual companions to patients, families and staff.
As valued members of the clinical team, they collaborate with other clinical staff in promoting an integrated healing process, which focuses on the whole person: spirit, mind, and body. This integrative approach supports and augments Spaulding’s corporate mission to provide a full continuum of rehabilitation treatment and care and to enable patients to achieve their highest levels of functioning, independence, and performance.
Spaulding’s interfaith multi-cultural Pastoral Care team is comprised of Interfaith Chaplains representing Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish traditions. Chaplains and support clergy hold master’s degrees in theology or related fields.
Local clergy and religious leaders from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and other faith traditions are available as needed to serve the spiritual needs of individual patients. In addition, Pastoral Volunteers assist with patient visitation.
As members of the clinical team, Chaplains serve on the Ethics Advisory and other hospital committees. They offer in-service training on spirituality and healthcare to employees and interns, and collaborate with Employee Assistance personnel to support patients and staff in crisis situations.
Dr. Joan Horgan, D. Min., has served as the Director of Pastoral Care Services at Spaulding since 2001. She is a board-certified Chaplain through the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. She earned her Doctorate in Ministry from Andover Newton School of Theology and holds a Masters in Theology and a Masters in Divinity from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
