Research & Clinical Trials

Research & Innovation at Spaulding

Maintaining the status quo has no place at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. Research and innovation in physical medicine and rehabilitation is at the heart of our mission and the core of our work.

Spaulding researchers, including physicians and other clinicians, are working on over 100 different research studies on a wide variety of topics all with the aim of improving the care we deliver and patient outcomes. We are working to:

  • Improve neurological and  musculoskeletal functions
  • Understand the effects of physical activity, inactivity, and exercise
  • Apply research on new technologies
  • Integrate patient support and mental health into therapeutic regimens
  • Evaluate the efficacy and delivery of new treatments

Research in Action

At Spaulding, we aim to apply the results of research and new ideas to patient care as quickly as possible. As the principal teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, new ideas and a passion for innovation are part of our makeup. This academic affiliation and our combined resources allow us to maintain a vigorous research agenda and operate ongoing clinical trials. Clinical areas of focus include:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Aging/geriatrics
  • Cardiovascular rehab
  • Motion analysis
  • Muscle cell physiology
  • Robotic therapy
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke

These and other endeavors enhance Spaulding’s treatment programs, with clinical research results often quickly finding their way to the bedside.
