Remarkable Recovery: Debbie Silviera
An inspiring story of determination and triumph
Debbie Silviera
Stroke

Spaulding doesn't have that sterile hospital feeling you get elsewhere... Everyone there is so warm, so kind - they take their time and have your full recovery in mind.

Background
In July of 2001 Debbie Silviera suffered a stroke due to a rare condition known as AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation). At 31 years old she had to relearn to walk, talk and perform other routine life skills. Even before her Spaulding admission, Debbie's care team had begun to work for her. They assessed her case and developed a rehabilitation program for her needs. Every day Debbie had physical, occupational, and speech language therapies.

Since her discharge Debbie has excelled. Her personal fortitude, her family's support, and exceptional care all contributed to her success. Debbie's back to her full-time work and has earned a master's degree.

Debbie's Story
"They would push me and push me-they made me work for myself," Debbie says of her care team. "I even had to push my own wheelchair to therapy." Her persistence paid off. She remembers the first day she walked, with the help of her therapists, her physician, Dr. Randie Black-Schaffer, and a custom brace from Spaulding's brace clinic. "I remembered thinking that if I can walk again, I can do anything," she recalls.

Today, Debbie feels she "can do anything now," including learning how to windsurf in the Dr. Charles H. Weingarten Adaptive Sports Program. "What an experience," she says. "It felt amazing to be out and doing something different."

"They worked very hard with me, yet they were so compassionate," says Debbie about her rehabilitation at Spaulding. "My time there was incredible."
