All services available at: MedfordAcupuncture and Massage Therapy available at: Wellesley We believe that each person has internal healing mechanisms that are resources for recovery and for maintaining health. Burdened by everyday stress, we lose touch with this 'wisdom of the body'. At Spaulding, we provide simple techniques and treatments to help you harness the power of your own body, mind, and spirit.
The techniques we use come from a variety of cultures and eras; some are ancient and some are new. All integrative medicine treatments - also known as complementary and alternative medicine, mind/body therapy, or holistic treatment - have been clinically proven to be effective.
Our holistic treatment team includes a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and physical and occupational therapists. In addition to being fully licensed to practice their conventional disciplines, our team members have each completed extensive training in Integrative Medicine through prominent holistic training facilities.
All our treatment programs are individualized according to your specific goals and aspirations.
Acupuncture
This traditional form of Chinese medicine involves the stimulation of an individual's life energy, or Qi (pronounced 'chee'). Acupuncture uses needles or finger pressure to unblock stagnant energy. It is helpful in treating chronic headaches, osteoarthritis, repetitive strain injury, and numerous musculoskeletal conditions.
T'ai Chi
T'ai Chi uses simple movement patterns to involve the whole body and mind in a 'moving meditation." T'ai Chi can also be used as a rehabilitation therapy to painlessly increase range of motion, improve balance, and prevent falls in older individuals. A popular innovation at Spaulding-Medford is our specially adapted T'ai Chi Program for older clients and for individuals with disabilities.
Yoga
Yoga consists of physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, and meditation. Potential health benefits of yoga practice include:
| • | Improving strength, flexibility and balance |
| • | Reducing excess muscle tension and anxiety |
| • | Improving mood and concentration |
| • | Improving self-acceptance |
Many people think that one needs to be very flexible to practice yoga. In fact, anyone can do yoga; how it is done by one person can be very different than is appropriate for another. We emphasize adapting yoga practice to a person's individual abilities and needs. We have yoga classes, as well as opportunities to work with people on an individual basis.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback training teaches us how to control body responses that we usually do not notice, such as muscle tension or hand temperature. Our clients learn to control responses that are overactive or under active and to bring the body to a healthy balance. Biofeedback can be helpful for managing pain, headaches, repetitive strain injury, high blood pressure, Raynaud's syndrome, and stress.
Hypnosis
By focusing our attention on positive images and suggestions, we can influence our bodies to function at their best. Hypnosis has been proven effective in enhancing self-confidence, improving performance, and altering physical discomfort from pain. It can often help to manage stress and its related symptoms, including insomnia and anxiety.
Myofascial Release and Craniosacral Therapy
In myofascial release, therapists use light pressure to stretch and relax the connective tissue that surrounds tense muscles. This is helpful for patients who have had an injury, musculoskeletal pain, or a limited range of motion. Craniosacral therapy involves gentle palpation of the skull and tailbone by a trained therapist. It unwinds restrictions in the membranes that protect the central nervous system, and is used to treat patients with arthritis, back pain, and stress-related symptoms.
Massage Therapy
Massaging the muscles can induce a state of deep comfort. Our licensed massage therapists use several techniques, including gentle and deep tissue massage, designed to have a positive effect on client health and well-being. Massage is an effective treatment for many health issues, including stress, lower back pain, arthritis, neuritis, and circulatory problems. As specialty services, our massage therapists also offer hot stone massages and pregnancy massage.
Meditation
Meditation is an invaluable tool for quieting the mind and body. Most of us are consistently bombarded by stimulation and information. If this state of agitation is never shut off, the resulting distress can cause health problems. We teach several techniques, including mindfulness, breath focus, and guided imagery, to help you achieve a state of well-being. Meditation has been proven effective for insomnia, anxiety, pain management, reducing blood pressure, increasing immune response, and assisting with infertility issues.
Energy Work
These treatments help increase the flow of an individual's innate vitality:
| • | Therapeutic Touch is a non-contact treatment to help balance an individual's external energy field. |
| • | Energy Healing is a hands-on treatment to balance energy blockages at physical, emotional, and spiritual levels to enhance vitality. |
| • | Reiki is an ancient Eastern healing technique in which the practitioner channels healing energy to release energy blocks and raise vitality. |
