Remarkable Recovery: Jason Crigler
A musician on the rise reclaims his life and career
Jason Crigler
Brain Injury

From Jason's caregiver's view, his recovery is nothing short of remarkable.

Background
On the night of August 4, 2004 in New York City, Jason Crigler prepared to play with his band just as he had done hundreds of times before. With a promising music career playing with the likes of Norah Jones and Marshall Crenshaw, his dreams were just beginning to be realized. In an instant that all changed.

While on stage playing in front of a sold out club, Jason felt that something was wrong. He stumbled off the stage toward his wife Monica, eventually outside, and then into an ambulance. This was the last thing Jason would remember for a year a half.

Jason was taken to a New York area hospital where he would stay for six months. He had suffered a major stroke as a result of an Arterio-Venous Malformation (AVM). The AVM was so severe that it left Jason in a vegetative state. With his wife Monica three months pregnant at the time, and as his family gathered at his side an uncertain future lie ahead.

After six months in an acute care setting, Jason was transferred to Spaulding.

Jason's Recovery
At Spaulding Jason endured many ups and downs as he went through therapy. At one point, he even lost all the responsiveness he had gained and had to start his therapies all over again. But with determination Jason and his care team set about to the work of intensive therapy. The smallest improvement brought hope to both he and his family. After a long and tough rode however Jason showed signs that he was going to make it. He'd make a playful joke with his wife and new daughter Ellie, hum a few bars of a song and could walk a little longer each and everyday. Just months after his initial admission Jason's recovery was astounding, from his caregiver's view his recovery is nothing short of remarkable.

In February 2007, Jason returned to the same club and stage that he had suffered his stroke and played songs from his new album inspired by his recovery. With hundreds of family, friends and fans cheering Jason showed just how far he'd come.

His story is also part of an award-winning documentary, "Life.Support.Music" by his good friend Erik Metzger. The film follows Jason from his early darks days after the injury, through the difficult road of therapy to his triumphant return to the stage and studio. Featuring several Spaulding staff, Jason and his wife Monica have used the film and their story to inspire patients who are beginning their own recovery.
