Remarkable Recovery: Daniel Winston
A courageous return from a coma
Daniel Winston
Brain Injury

From the moment we walked in the door we were treated as family. Everyone understood what we were going through and were focused on helping Daniel get better. --Ted Winston, Daniel's father

Background
Daniel Winston and his family were headed home after Daniel's performance in a local concert. A drunk driver sideswiped their SUV, and Daniel's head was impaled by his own tuba case. After his initial hospitalization Daniel was transferred to Spaulding's TBI (traumatic brain injury) unit.

Following his discharge from Spaulding ,Daniel went on to score 1590 out of 1600 on his SAT exams and was accepted early decision to prestigious Williams College.

Daniel's Story
Denise Winston, Daniel's mother:
"So much was at stake for Dan. The doctor on call the night of our crash, Tom Tracey, is the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Tom saved Dan's life. It is because of Tom that we chose Spaulding. Tom spent hours of his own time researching facilities across the country that could best help Dan and he told us that, in his opinion, Spaulding was Dan's best hope for a good recovery.
When Daniel arrived at Spaulding on June 5, 2003 he was still on a feeding tube, he could not hold up his head, move his right arm, walk, talk, eat. And, though he was no longer in a coma, we would find out from Dan weeks later, that he does not remember anything about Hasbro or his first two weeks at Spaulding, I honestly never thought I would see our bright, articulate, talented and sweet son again.

When Dan was released from Spaulding on July 2, 2003 he was walking, talking, eating "real food". He was also beginning to play the piano again and was able to participate in the water sports program. A miracle in four weeks!"

“Our whole experience at Spaulding really opened our eyes to the value of rehabilitation. Until we experienced it, we had no idea what an effect rehab can have on one's life.”
